Rumtek is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. This is located in Sikkim, India. Major festival of this monastery is Tse Chu Chaams. As per the Tibetan calendar, this festival celebrates on the 10th day of the 5th month. In general it comes in the month of June. In Sikkim this is the largest monastery. This monastery is located 23kms away from Gangtok.
What to see in Rumtek Monastery: This is the seat of karmapa Lama. He was the third highest monk in Tibetan Buddhism. Other name of this Monastery is Dharma chakra Centre. Under the supervision of 9th Karmapa, this was built by 4th king of Sikkim. This monastery is most beautiful surrounded by lush green landscape. It offers spiritual solace. It looks like original Kagyu. The Kaghu School is one of the six main schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Cave in this place is having significant importance. It is believed that first Karmapa meditated in this cave for many years. Entry is free to all the visitors but foreigners have to show their passport before entering into monastery. During the winter season this opens between 10 AM to 5 PM and during the summer season this opens between 8 AM to 5 PM.
This was built by karmapa Wangchuck Dorje in 16th century. Main seat of power for Karma kagyu sect in Sikkim is Rumtek. In 1959 this was ruined which was recognised by Gyalwa karmapa. So he rebuilt this monastery at Rumtek. Near this monastery Nalanda Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies is located. Uphill from monastery is a hermitage where Monks go to meditation for the period of 3 years. In a walk able distance old monastery can be seen. This was destroyed earlier due to fire. But again this was reconstructed.

Ravangla: It is locate 62kms away from Rumtek. This place is famous for tea gardens, thick forested hills. For the natural lovers this is the best place to enjoy. Other attractions of this place are Temi Tea Garden, Buddha Park, Borong and Ralong hot springs. Trekking activity is most famous in this place.

Nearest railway station is located at Siliguri which is more than 118kms from the monastery. Nearest airport is Bagdogra which is 126kms away from the monastery. This airport is well connected with Guwahati, Delhi, and Kolkata. From this airport private vehicle, taxis, Jeeps are available to reach to the monastery.
